Patrick Cosgrove
My art is a deep engagement, a process that results in a tangible meditation upon the beauty of where I live. My palette is impressionistic in a search for the light and vitality that rises from complementary colors — yet my compositions use line and shape and brushwork to create a more expressionistic energy and tension. I work from my own reference photographs, and feel fully engaged in both mediums. A painting with its embedded, re-worked layers yields a sense of time and depth, a sense of experience within a view that rewards looking again and again. In this exploration I search for the intensity of being fully alive within that scene, that moment of original capture that I can then share.
I use water-miscible oils without solvents, upon linen or canvas as these surfaces respond well to the vigor of my brush and knife work, to the spreading, scraping, re-working, and finally glazing of the much-churned surface.
